CINDER-KARI, A DIGI-TALE

By: Patamon_Princess

Far away, in a distant land, lived a mother and her three daughters in a beautiful kingdom. Their medium-sized house rested in a grove a mile from the village marketplace. The two older daughters and their mother spent their days embroidering, reading, and doing various other un-strenuous activities. Their younger stepsister, however, was forced to work for her small room in the servant's quarters. A young girl at the age of seven when her father died, the girl worked as a servant for the next fourteen years, obeying the demands of her step-family. And so, our story begins one warm morning.

[The sun shines across the bed as a middle-aged woman rolls over and sits up. She stands and walks over to the bell-pull, but pauses at her reflection in the mirror.]

STEPMOTHER: Aaahh!!

[In a smaller bed, a blue Digimon turns over and sleepily opens his eyes.]

DIGIMON: What is it?
STEPMOTHER: Veemon, why am I wearing a dress?! And what are these in my ears?!
VEEMON: I believe they're called earrings, Daisy.
DAVIS: Daisy?! What kind of name is that? My name is Davis!
VEEMON: Not for this story. You're Daisy, the stepmother.
DAVIS: Says who?

[From under his bed, Veemon pulls out a script. Turning to the first page, he hands the book to Davis.]

VEEMON: Says the writer, Patamon_Princess.
DAVIS: Let me see. (Reads) Daisy the stepmother played by Davis Motomiya. What?! I didn't agree to this.

[Pulls out a cell phone.]

DAVIS: I'll get to the bottom of this mess.
PATAMON_PRINCESS: Hello?
DAVIS: Patamon_Princess? It's me, Davis.
PATAMON_PRINCESS: Davis? What is it? It's the middle of the night.
DAVIS: Oh, sorry. I forgot about the time change. Anyway, I need to talk to you about this script. How come I'm the stepmother?!
PATAMON_PRINCESS: Don't you remember? Everyone drew straws for the lesser parts.
DAVIS: But I'm no good at drawing!
PATAMON_PRINCESS: Not that kind! You pulled out the red-tipped straw which means you’re the stepmother, Daisy.
DAVIS: What about the others? What are they?
PATAMON_PRINCESS: You'll have to find that out on your own.
DAVIS: I'm not doing this! I want my old clothes back!
PATAMON_PRINCESS: All right, listen. If you do this through with no interruptions, you can have your clothes back and I'll give you a triple chocolate sundae.
DAVIS: With sprinkles and a cherry?
PATAMON_PRINCESS: Any toppings you want.
DAVIS: It's a deal.
PATAMON_PRINCESS: Good. Have fun. *yawn* Good night.
DAVIS: Good night.

[He puts the cell phone away.]

DAVIS: All right. If I want to get my real identity back, I have to go through with this. Fine. Let's get this over with.
DAISY: (in a high-pitched over-done female voice) It’s time to get ready for the day!

[Veemon covers his ears.]

VEEMON: Ow! I'm sure you can talk in your own voice.
DAISY: Oh, good.

[Suddenly, the two step-sisters rush in.]

SONDRA: Mother, Karina won't answer my call.
YOLANDA: We've been calling her for five minutes.
SONDRA: We want to get dressed.
DAISY: Dress yourselves.
YOLANDA: What?!
SONDRA: Mother, are you feeling okay?
DAISY: Yes.
VEEMON: Psst! Daisy, that's not right. Didn't you read the script?
DAISY: Oh, right. (In the high voice.) My dear girls, let us go down to the servants’ quarters and see what that sluggard is doing.
VEEMON: Nice going, Daisy.

[The three leave and Veemon turns over and goes back to sleep.]

[Down in the servant's quarters, Daisy stops in front of the farthest door. Lifting the latch, she opens it and enters the room. Inside, a beam of light from the window shines across a small bed where a young woman sleeps curled up with a white cat.]

DAISY: What are you doing, girl?! It's morning!

[Karina sits up and rubs her eyes.]

KARINA: What? Stepmother?
DAISY: Yes, who did you think it was? The prince?
YOLANDA & SONDRA: *snicker*
KARINA: No, I...
DAISY: You what? Forgot what your duties were? Servants have been whipped for being lazy.
KARINA: I'm sorry, stepmother.

[Karina climbs out of bed and pulls on an old, worn dress. The cat also jumps out of bed.]

DAISY: That's better. Now, because you're late, you won't have time for breakfast. Go to the kitchen and bring us our breakfasts to our rooms. Then when we are done, you will help my two daughters with their dressing.
KARINA: Yes, stepmother.

[Karina and Gatomon hurry out of the room and up to the kitchen.]

[Later that day, Kari and Gatomon are up in some trees gathering apples.]

KARINA: I tell you, Gatomon, that was close. Stepmother must be in a good mood. No meal is the least harshest punishment.
GATOMON: What made you sleep in? You're usually up before the sun.
KARINA: I know, but I don't know why I slept in.
GATOMON: What were you dreaming about?
KARINA: Dancing under a star-filled sky with the young prince. What about you?
GATOMON: The same, except I was dancing with the prince's best friend.
KARINA: Who knows. Maybe it's a sign of better things to come. When you've hit rock bottom like us, there's only one way to go. Up.
GATOMON: Right!

[Two Digimon fly up.]

HAWKMON: Gatomon, we're hungry.
BIYOMON: Go bring us some food.
GATOMON: All right, don't get your tail feathers ruffled. I'm coming.

[Gatomon jumps down and heads towards the house followed by Biyomon and Hawkmon. Karina smiles and climbs down from the tree and moves her ladder to another one, when a rustling in the bushes causes her to pause.]

KARINA: Who's there?

[A caped figure emerges from the bushes.]

KARINA: What are you doing here? This is private property.

[The person shakes his cape and smoothes it down, and Karina catches a sparkle on the cloth. The figure looks at Karina and she sees an earring and headband sparkle. Karina quickly kneels on the ground.]

KARINA: Princess, I am so sorry. I did not know it was you. I apologize for my rude behavior.

[The princess pushes back her hood and pulls Karina up.]

PRINCESS: Don't worry about it. What is your name?
KARINA: Karina, your highness.
PRINCESS: Call me Mia.
KARINA: Yes, your highness-- Mia.
MIA: That's better. And I'm sorry for trespassing. I've never been here before.
KARINA: You've never seen the kingdom where you live?
MIA: *un-princess-like snort* From a carriage window. I'm not allow out of the palace grounds on my own.
KARINA: Then how did you come to be out here?
MIA: I was on my way to meet my father for a meeting with the Prime Minister and our carriage lost a wheel. In the confusion, I sneaked off. But I forgot about my dress. If anyone sees it, they'll return me to my father or hold me for ransom.
KARINA: Are you running away?
MIA: Oh, no, I wouldn't leave my family like that. I just wanted to be alone for awhile. Not having people waiting on you hand and foot.
KARINA: Is it that bad?
MIA: Not really. But since I'm the only daughter it sometimes feels like I'm trapped in a cage. If only I wasn't so recognizable in this dress.
KARINA: Do you want to borrow one of mine?
MIA: Are you sure?
KARINA: Yes. I know how you feel. When you wish you could escape for even an hour. Come on, it's this way.
MIA: Thank you.

[Karina leads the princess around to the back of the servants quarters and enters unnoticed through the back door. They enter her room where Karina goes to a small chest in a corner.]

MIA: This is where you live?
KARINA: Yes. It's small, but at least it's dry.
MIA: Oh, I thought you were the daughter of this house. Oh, I'm sorry. I sometimes speak without thinking first.

[Karina holds up a simple purple dress.]

KARINA: It's all right. My step-mother is the mistress here and she and my two step-sisters live in the upper apartments.

[Mia starts to undress and lays her dress on Karina's bed. The dress has several rips and holes in the top gauze layer.]

MIA: What about your father?
KARINA: My father died when I was seven.
MIA: My mother died when I was two, giving birth to my little brother. So your step-mother made you work? That's awful. I shall talk with my father about this.

[She pulls on the purple dress which fits her perfectly.]

KARINA: Please don't. If step-mother found out that I even talked to you, I would be punished.
MIA: All right. But if you ever need help, come to the palace. Just say you're a friend of mine.

[She puts the cape back on.]

MIA: There, perfect. I don't have much on me, but you may have the dress and these pieces of jewelry.

[She takes off her earrings and the headband.]

KARINA: Oh, no. I couldn't.
MIA: You're helping me. I wish to give these to you. I've never had a friend before.
KARINA: I'm honored, Princess Mia.
DAISY: Cinderkari! Are you finished picking those apples yet?
KARINA: Oh, I forgot. We must go.

[She stuffs the dress and jewelry in the bottom of the chest and they leave the house and hurry back to the apple trees.]

KARINA: Coming, step-mother!
MIA: Cinderkari? It's so harsh.
KARINA: I've gotten used to it.

[She picks up the baskets.]

KARINA: Good day. And good luck.
MIA: Thank you, Karina.

[The princess disappears back into the bushes as Karina returns to the house.]

DAISY: What took you so long?
KARINA: I am sorry. Some of the apples were hard to reach.
DAISY: Well, I expect you and Gatomon to join us in the sitting room in five minutes. I have just received the most wonderful news.
KARINA: Yes, step-mother.

[Five minutes later, Karina and Gatomon enter the sitting room. Sondra and Yolanda are relaxing on half-couches while Biyomon and Hawkmon sit on plush cushions. Veemon sits in a chair, eating, and Daisy stands next to it.]

DAISY: There you are. Now, for my news.
YOLANDA: Are we getting new clothes?
SONDRA: New jewels?
BIYOMON: Gold eating bowls?
HAWKMON: Trip to Hollywood?
VEEMON: All the food you can eat?
DAISY: No, no. Much better.
VEEMON: What's better than food?
DAISY: A Royal Ball!!
SONDRA & YOLANDA & BIYOMON: A ball!!
HAWKMON & VEEMON: A ball??
VEEMON: What's a ball?
HAWKMON: Don't look at me. Could they mean the bouncy orbs of air?
PATAMON_PRINCESS: Not that kind of ball.
KARINA: Patamon_Princess, what are you doing here?
PATAMON_PRINCESS: I'm just passing through. I have a meeting with my publisher about another story idea.
VEEMON: So, what's a ball?

[Patamon_Princess pulls out a chart.]

PATAMON_PRINCESS: A ball is a dance that people attend. There is lots of dancing and conversations.
VEEMON: Dancing? Blech!
DAISY: I have to wear more dresses?! In public?! Where people will see me?!
GATOMON: A party! Oh, how lovely!
HAWKMON: It might be fun.
BIYOMON: You bet.
YOLANDA: What am I going to wear?
SONDRA: I don't have anything to wear either!
KARINA: Miss Patamon_Princess?
PATAMON_PRINCESS: Yes?
KARINA: What sort of a ball is it?
PATAMON_PRINCESS: Well, it's...
DAISY: I'll take over from here.
PATAMON_PRINCESS: Go right ahead, Daisy.
DAISY: *clears throat* It is a royal ball, meaning it is to be held at the palace one week from now. This type consists of three consecutive nights at the end of which the eldest Prince shall choose a bride.
PATAMON_PRINCESS: That's right. The first two nights are regular balls, but the third night is a Costume Ball.
VEEMON: Will there be food?
PATAMON_PRINCESS: Feasts. Now, I must go. I'll see you later.
ALL: Bye!
VEEMON: One more question...
PATAMON_PRINCESS: Yes?
VEEMON: Do you have any chocolate?

[Patamon_Princess hands him a small candy bar.]

PATAMON_PRINCESS: Here you go.
VEEMON: Thanks!
DAVIS: Hey, that's not fair! I want one!
PATAMON_PRINCESS: Bye, everyone! Have fun!

[She disappears.]

DAVIS: But I want chocolate!
KARINA: A royal ball?!
GATOMON: Sounds like fun.
DAVIS: Huh? Fine then.
DAISY: (in the high-pitched voice) Girls, we must prepare for this ball. We have so much to do!
BIYOMON: Are anyone else's ears ringing?
DAISY: (in normal voice) Sorry. Karina, I'm going to prepare a list of items we will need. And tomorrow, you and Gatomon shall go to town and purchase them.
KARINA: Yes, step-mother.
DAISY: Then you shall work with the other servants to get my daughters ready for the three balls.
KARINA: Yes, step-mother.
GATOMON: Ms. Daisy, may we go to the ball as well?
KARINA: Gatomon!
YOLANDA & SONDRA: You?!
VEEMON, BIYOMON & HAWKMON: Seriously?!
DAISY: Well, I guess you could, if you can find something suitable to wear. Now, go finish your duties.
KARINA: Yes, step-mother.

[She and Gatomon leave.]

SONDRA: Mother, you're not serious? You're not really going to let Karina come with us?
YOLANDA: A servant girl at a royal ball?
DAISY: Don't worry, my daughters. She'll be too busy to fashion anything remotely suitable to wear.
ALL THREE: *laugh*

[The next day, Karina and Gatomon are in the village, shopping. Their arms are full of parcels and bags.]

GATOMON: So, what are you going to wear to the ball?
KARINA: Oh, I'm not going.
GATOMON: Not going? But they said you could.
KARINA: Do you really think they were serious? Think about it, Gatomon. I'm a servant. And servants don't attend balls unless it's to serve food.
GATOMON: But you're not really a servant. You're the daughter of the house. You should stand up to them.
KARINA: If I show the least bit of retaliation, they might throw us out. Then where'll we be?
GATOMON: But, Kari, you shouldn't just give up. I might have been a baby YukimiBotamon when your mother introduced us, but I know you better than anyone. And if anyone deserves to go to the ball, it's you.
KARINA: Tell me about my mother.
GATOMON: I've told you countless times, but okay. She was a beautiful woman and when she laughed, everyone around couldn't help but smile. And when she put her mind to something, almost no one could stop her. She never gave up and neither should you. You look just like her, only younger.
KARINA: But I don't have anything to wear.
GATOMON: Sure you do! That dress Princess Mia gave you. You could fashion it to fit. Come on, Kari. Go for it. You'll never know what could happen unless you take the first step. And I know your mother would say the same. (thinking) And I'd say more, but it's not time yet.

[That night, Karina lit a candle and pulled out the princess' dress from the bottom of the chest.]

KARINA: The top layer will have to come off. There are too many rips in it. But the material is still good.
GATOMON: Could you fashion a dress for me?
KARINA: That's a great idea! Let's get to work.
PATAMON_PRINCESS: For the next week, Daisy, Sondra, Yolanda and their Digimon kept Karina and Gatomon busy running around doing odd jobs. When they didn't need them at that moment, they gave them unimportant jobs to do to keep them busy. But every morning before the sun rose and every night, Karina and Gatomon worked hard on their dresses until the night before the ball, they were ready.

[The next night, Karina and Gatomon stand at the foot of the stairs with the other servants and watch as Daisy, Yolanda and Sondra walk down the stairs dressed in brightly colored ball gowns. They were followed by Veemon and Hawkmon in suits and Biyomon in a dress.]

DAISY: Well, we're off. Karina and Gatomon need be the only ones to stay up until we return to help us in.
YOLANDA: Didn't have time to make a dress?
KARINA: No. Not to make one from scratch.
SONDRA: Too bad. We're going to have a fabulous time!

[They walk outside and climb into the carriage. Once the door shuts, the horses head towards the village and the castle. As soon as the carriage disappears from sight, the servants all blow out the candles not needed and head for their quarters. Karina bars the door to her room as Gatomon opens the chest and pulls out the two dresses.]

KARINA: It's an hour walk to the palace so we should leave at midnight, well before the Ball ends, so we have time to change out of our dresses.
GATOMON: Good idea. And, so we're not seen on the road, we can wear our cloaks and hide them in a tree when we get near the palace.
KARINA: Right.

[They finish dressing and Karina clips on Princess Mia's earrings and threads a ribbon through her hair. Gatomon straightens the jeweled headband around her ears and reaches back into the chest.]

KARINA: What are you getting, Gatomon?

[From a secret compartment, the Digimon pulls out a small box.]

GATOMON: Your mother wanted me to give this to you when you turned eighteen, but I was afraid your step-mother might take it away.

[Karina opens the box and inside is a thin gold chain with a single pearl drop hanging from it. She fastens it around her neck and it rests in the hollow of her throat.]

GATOMON: You look beautiful.
KARINA: Thank you.

[The two of them pull on their cloaks and fasten the hoods over their heads. Lighting a small lantern, Karina leads the way out the back door and towards the palace.]

[At the palace, the ball is in full swing. Guests are either dancing eating small finger treats, or chatting. At one end of the large ballroom sits King Tatius. On his right sits Princess Mia, and on the left sits Prince Martin and Prince Takius. In front of each of them sits their Digimon: Palmon, Agumon, Gabumon, and Patamon.]

MARTIN: Father, why did you have to have these Balls? I'm not ready to get married. There are still things I want to do.
TATIUS: All right, son. If you don't find anyone at the ball, I'll let you take your time, but not too long.
MARTIN: Thank you, Father.
MIA: And if he does find someone, I'll have to warn her about what she's getting herself into.
MARTIN: Michela! And I'll have to warn your future husband!
MIA: *snort* Don't remind me. It's not fair you get to choose your future wife, but my marriage has to be arranged. And you know I don't like being called Michela.
TATIUS: Now, now, my children. Stop bickering. The Prince from the neighboring kingdom will be arriving tomorrow to meet Mia.
MIA: *sigh*
TAKIUS: Don't worry, Mia. At least you don't have to worry about if the one you marry only likes you fro your title and money.
MARTIN: You've been reading too much T.K.
PATAMON: What else is there to do?
GABUMON: Hunt, fencing, and advise people.
AGUMON: Not to mention all the food you can eat.
PATAMON: You two and your stomachs.
PALMON: Relax, Mia. Just enjoy the ball.
MIA: You're right, Palmon.

[The Prime Minister raps his staff on the floor.]

IZAK: When you are announced, please make your way forward to great his majesty and his children.
PATAMON_PRINCESS: And so it began. Families were called forward including Daisy and her daughters. When the last person bowed to the King, the dancing began again as a mysterious person entered the hall, and paused at the top of the stairs.
KARINA: Gatomon, I'm nervous.
GATOMON: Relax, breathe, and try not to let them know how nervous you are.

[The two of them make their way down the stairs as dancers and guests pause and look at the new arrivals. Patamon perks up and Takius sits up straighter as Izak walks towards the new guest. Karina stops at the bottom of the staircase and looks around as the Prime Minister approaches.]

IZAK: May I have your name, miss, so that I may announce you.
KARINA: Uh, my name? It's...uh...

[She looks around and notices her step-family.]

IZAK: Miss?
KARINA: Rina. My name is Rina.
IZAK: Miss Rina, please come with me.

[He leads her towards the King and leaves her standing in front of the royal family.]

IZAK: The Lady Rina.
TATIUS: Welcome.
MIA: *gasp*
KARINA: *curtsy* Your Majesty.

[She and Gatomon curtsey and then start to move away. The dancing and talking slowly start up again.]

TATIUS: Wait a moment, my dear.
KARINA: Um, yes, your majesty?
TATIUS: You look familiar. Have you ever been here before?
KARINA: No, your majesty. This is my first time.
TATIUS: What about your parents?
KARINA: My mother died when I was two and my father followed five years later.
TATIUS: I am sorry to hear that.
MIA: Father, since Lady Rina hasn't been here before, may I show her around?
TATIUS: Of course, my dear.
TAKIUS: I'll come along.
PATAMON: Me too.
MARTIN: You two?
TAKIUS: Well, it's not right for two young ladies to walk around unescorted.
PATAMON: That's right.
GABUMON: Sure.
TATIUS: Very well. You shall escort them.
MIA: Come on, Lady Rina.

[Mia takes Karina's arm and leads her away. Palmon and Gatomon follow behind and Prince Takius and Patamon walk behind them.]

MIA: I'm so glad you could come. I hope you didn't get in trouble last week.
KARINA: No. My step-mother never found out.
PALMON: I wish I could've been with Mia when she left her carriage, but I was in a conference with the two prince Digimon and King Agumon.
GATOMON: I wasn't there either. I had just been called away to help my step-Digimon.
TAKIUS: Father still hasn't gotten over it.
PATAMON: You really scared him.
MIA: Oh, T.K. You know I was just having some fun.
TAKIUS: Before your fiancé arrives?
KARINA: Fiancé?
MIA: Oh, he had to bring that up. My Father had betrothed me to a prince from a neighboring kingdom. He is arriving tomorrow in time for the second ball.
PALMON: You'll be here, won't you?
GATOMON: I don't know. Maybe.
MIA: T.K., could you get us something to drink?
TAKIUS: Me?
MIA: Yes, little brother. I want to talk with Lady Rina.
TAKIUS: All right. Just don't go anywhere. Come on, Patamon.
PATAMON: Right behind you.

[The two of them leave.]

MIA: Kari, I love what you've done with that dress. And you've even made one for your friend.
KARINA: Oh, this is Gatomon.
GATOMON: *curtsy* Your highness.
MIA: It's nice to meet you. And this is Palmon.
PALMON: Hello.
MIA: Does your step-mother know you're here.
KARINA: No, and I hope she doesn't recognize me.
MIA: Which one is she?
KARINA: She's the one over there by the table with the blue Digimon.

[Daisy and Veemon stand next to a table, eating.]

DAISY: Veemon, that was my cream puff.
VEEMON: No it wasn't. It was just sitting there. Besides, you've had five already.
DAISY: Yeah, well you've had seven.
MIA: Ah, yes. I remember her and her daughters being introduced.
KARINA: They really are nice.
PALMON: Are they coming to the next two balls?
GATOMON: Yes. We've been busy with the servants getting the gowns and suits ready.
MIA: What are you going to go as for the Costume Ball?
KARINA: I'm not coming for the next balls.
MIA: But you have to!
KARINA: I don't have any other dresses.
MIA: Leave that to me. *winks*
KARINA: Huh?
MIA: Relax. Enjoy tonight's party.

[Patamon and Prince Takius return. Takius is carrying a tray with six filled glasses on it. Mia and Palmon each take one as Patamon flies one down to Gatomon and Takius hands one to Karina.]

TAKIUS: I don't think we've been properly introduced. I am Prince Takius, but you can call me T.K.
PATAMON: And I'm Prince Patamon, but you can call me...uh...Patamon.
GATOMON: I am Gatomon. *curtsy* It's very nice to meet you.
TAKIUS: And you are the Lady Rina, correct?
KARINA: Uh, yes. *blush*
TAKIUS: Would you care to dance?
KARINA: I'm afraid I don't really know how.
MIA: Neither does he.
TAKIUS: Michela, quiet!
MIA & PALMON: *giggle*
KARINA: Very well, your highness.

[Takius leads Karina out onto the dance floor. The crowd parts to watch the young prince dance.]

PATAMON: Um, would you like to dance?
GATOMON: I'd love to.
PATAMON: Really? Then, come on!

[Patamon and Gatomon run out onto the dance floor and then start to dance.]

KARINA: They seem to be getting along well.
TAKIUS: Yes. But I wish to learn more about you.
KARINA: About me? Well, I...I...I'm so nervous, I'm not sure what to say.
TAKIUS: You've noticed everyone staring, huh? I know that can be nerve-wracking.

[He holds up his arm and waves his hand and the other couples in the room start to dance as well. Mia and Palmon move back to their seats next to the King.]

TATIUS: Quite a show, huh, Mia?
MIA: Yes, Father. It is impressive. Where has Martin gone off to?
TATIUS: He's walking around, talking to people. And I notice T.K. hasn't had trouble finding a dance partner.
MIA: Yes, they really hit it off.
TATIUS: That young Lady Rina is very lovely. She reminds me of someone, but I'm not sure. Maybe after a good night sleep it will come to me.
MIA: Maybe.
AGUMON: You've something on your mind, Mia?
MIA: No.
PALMON: Yes.
TATIUS: What are you planning now?
MIA: Nothing major, Father.
TATIUS: You're not getting out of your marriage to the Prince.
MIA: It's not that. I'm helping out a friend.
TATIUS: All right. I'll stay out of it. For now.
MIA: That's probably best.
PATAMON_PRINCESS: The hours pass as the ball continues. Prince Martin dances with several of the young ladies attending and even ask Sondra for a second dance. To Princess Mia's utter delight, her brother, Prince Takius, never left the Lady Rina's side. And Prince Patamon always made sure to stay by Lady Gatomon.
VEEMON: Hey, Miss Patamon_Princess, you're back.
PATAMON_PRINCESS: Well, I did receive an invitation.
VEEMON: Oh, so you want a cream puff?
PATAMON_PRINCESS: Thank you.

[Veemon hands her a napkin with a cream puff on it, and then continues to stand there.]

PATAMON_PRINCESS Is there something you want to say?
VEEMON: Um, would you like to dance?
PATAMON_PRINCESS: I'd love to.

[They move out onto the dance floor, and as they pass Karina and Takius also dancing, Patamon_Princess gives Kari a wink and a smile.]

TAKIUS: So, you know all about me. Now it's your turn.
KARINA: Well, my mother dies when I was two and my father passed away when I was seven, so I've been living with my father's second wife and her two daughters.
BONG
TAKIUS: And you've lived here all your life?
BONG
KARINA: As long as I can remember.
BONG
TAKIUS: May I be able to call on you sometime?
BONG
KARINA: I- I- What time is it?
BONG
TAKIUS: Midnight.
BONG
KARINA: Midnight? Oh, I must go.
TAKIUS: But...
BONG

[Karina runs over to Gatomon and Patamon.]

BONG
KARINA: Gatomon, we've got to go.
GATOMON: Now?
BONG
GATOMON: Oh, my. I'm sorry, your highness, but we must go.
BONG
PATAMON: But you haven't stayed long.
TAKIUS: Please, stay.
BONG KARINA: I can't.

[She turns and runs across the dance floor, followed by Gatomon. The two of them run up the stairs and out through the archway. Tatius and Mia have both stood up.]

BONG
TATIUS: What a strange occurrence.

[Takius and Patamon approach and sit in their chairs.]

TATIUS: Son, what happened?
TAKIUS: I don't know. Once she found out it was midnight, she left.
MIA: Excuse me.

[She walks away and slips through one of the side doors.]

[Outside the palace gates, Karina is sitting under a tree crying. Gatomon stands next to her, holding two cloaks.]

GATOMON: Kari, talk to me. What's wrong?
KARINA: I shouldn't have come.
GATOMON: What do you mean? You were having fun.

[Mia approaches, a cloak thrown over her dress.]

MIA: Kari?

[Karina looks up with tears streaming down her cheeks.]

MIA: Kari, what is it?
KARINA: I should have stayed home.
MIA: No. You were right to come. I saw you dancing with TK. You were so happy.
KARINA: No. I was wrong.
GATOMON: You took the first step and look what you accomplished. You made it to the ball, and your family didn't recognize you.
MIA: Did my brother say anything?
KARINA: No. Your brother is wonderful. That's the problem.

[Mia takes the cloak from Gatomon and pulls it over Karina. She then helps her up.]

MIA: Come on. You chose midnight to leave so you'd be home before your family, right?
KARINA: *nod*
MIA: You can't walk all that way after dancing for hours. I'll have my driver take you home.
KARINA: No, please. I don't want to be a burden.

[Mia leads her towards the coach-house. A man comes out, followed by a yellow Digimon.]

ARMADILLOMON: *yawn*
CONRAD: Princess, what are you doing here at this hour?
MIA: Ready my coach. I wish to accompany my friend home.
CONRAD: Yes, your highness.

[He and Armadillomon go into the stables.]

MIA: Karina, you are the first friend I've ever had. You're not going to be a burden. And besides, between you and me, I find these balls to be very dull after a few hours.
KARINA: *small smile*
MIA: There, I knew you could smile again.
GATOMON: But won't they miss you inside?
MIA: Nah. As long as I return near the end, I shant be missed. Now come on.

[They sit in silence until the carriage arrives. Karina climbs in, followed by Gatomon. Mia climbs in last and sits across from the two. Conrad closes the door and sits up on the driver seat. With a flick of the reins, the horses start out towards Karina's home.]

GATOMON: Are you okay, Karina?
KARINA: Yes. I'll be fine.
MIA: I've never seen TK act like that before.
KARINA: Act like what?
MIA: Star-struck. He's like me. He finds these balls tiresome after a while, and he rarely dances. The same with Patamon. But tonight, they both were dancing and never left either of your sides. I think he's taken with you.
KARINA: Don't be ridiculous. I'm a servant and I lied. No one would like me like that.
MIA: What have you lied about? I didn't hear anything close to that.
KARINA: They think I'm Rina, a well brought up lady. I've deceived them.
MIA: You misjudge them. They won't judge you for your dress and your jewels, but who you are on the inside. As for your name, Rina can be another nickname, like Kari. Don't worry about it.

[They reach their destination and Conrad jumps down and opens the door. Karina picks up Gatomon, who has fallen asleep and climbs out of the carriage.]

MIA: I'll see you tomorrow, Kari, okay?
KARINA: Okay.

[Conrad closes the door and climbs back up to his seat. With a flick of the reins, the horses clip-clop away into the darkness. Karina sneaks around to the back door and into her room. She switches Gatomon's dress for her usual one and tucks the Digimon into bed. She then changes her dress as well and hides the dresses, as well as the jewels, at the bottom of her chest. Blowing out the candle, she closes the door and heads upstairs to wait for her step-family to return.]

[Three hours later, Karina looks up from the book she was reading as the sound of a carriage stopping comes to her. Putting the book back on the shelf, she goes to the door just before her step-mother and sisters reach it.]

DAISY: Good, you're still up.

[The three of them hand Karina their cloaks and handbags and she hangs them up.]

DAISY: *yawn* Don't bother with breakfast tomorrow. We're going to sleep in. But don't forget that you have to get our dresses ready for tonight.
KARINA: Yes, step-mother.
YOLANDA: Where is Gatomon?
KARINA: I let her go to bed.
SONDRA: You have such a kind heart, Cinderkari.
DAISY: Well, come on girls. We must get our beauty sleep before the next ball.

[The six of them climb the stairs, the Digimon lagging a bit behind, yawning.]

BIYOMON: Bed never sounded so good.
HAWKMON: I'm so tired, even my feathers are falling asleep.
VEEMON: I think I ate too much, I'm stuffed.

[As they go to their rooms, Karina blows out the candles and heads to her bed. She climbs in next to Gatomon and falls asleep as her head hits the pillow.]

[Early that afternoon, Daisy, Yolanda, Sondra, and the three Digimon are sitting around the table eating lunch.]

SONDRA: Oh, I can't wait for tonight. I hope Prince Martin asks me to dance again.
YOLANDA: You two seemed pretty cozy last night.
SONDRA: Mother! Tell her to stop teasing me!
DAISY: Now, now girls. Calm down. You don't want to get worked up before the ball.
BIYOMON: By the way, where's Karina?
HAWKMON: She's out in the garden picking strawberries and singing to herself.
VEEMON: There's something different about her and Gatomon.
YOLANDA: Yeah, right.

[Out in the garden, Kari and Gatomon have their skirts hiked up above their ankles and baskets in their hands half-full of strawberries.]

KARINA: You know, Gatomon, besides the stain and thorns you get from doing this, strawberry picking is my favorite.
GATOMON: Mine too, because we can also eat some since no one's looking.

[Karina pops a strawberry into her mouth.]

KARINA: You're right.
GATOMON: Should we leave for the palace at the same time as last night?
KARINA: I told you, Gatomon, I'm not going.
GATOMON: But you told Mia you would.
KARINA: You know as well as I do that I just said that the make her happy.
GATOMON: But--

[A man, carrying a medium-sized package approaches them, followed by a green Digimon with a package on his back.]

KENDRIC: Excuse me, miss. Are you by chance, the Lady Karina?
KARINA: Yes, that's me.
KENDRIC: I have been instructed by Princess Mia to deliver this package to you.
WORMMON: And this one is for the Lady Gatomon from Princess Palmon.
GATOMON: I'm Gatomon.
KARINA: Princess Mia sent these?
KENDRIC: Yes, miss.
WORMMON: And you need not worry. We have been given specific instructions not to hand these packages over to anyone else.
GATOMON: Thank you.
KENDRIC: Good day, miss.

[He and Wormmon walk away.]

GATOMON: Let's open them.
KARINA: Wait. We have to bring the strawberries to the kitchen.
GATOMON: I'll do that. You bring the packages to our room.
KARINA: All right.

[A few minutes later, Gatomon joins Karina in their room. After locking the door, she joins her friend on the bed.]

GATOMON: You go first.
KARINA: Okay.

[She unties the string and pushes aside the brown paper. On top is a folded blue shawl with a hair ribbon of a lighter shade. Putting them aside, she pulls out a flowing light blue gown which shimmers as it catches the light.]

KARINA: Wow. It's beautiful.
GATOMON: There's a not with it.
KARINA: 'My carriage will be waiting for you at nine o'clock a half-mile from your home. Kendric will be there to help you. He's my trusted advisor, so don't worry. He delivered the dresses to you. I'll see you tonight. -Mia.'
GATOMON: Amazing.

[She opens her package to reveal a dark blue gown and a light blue shawl.]

GATOMON: Mine's just the opposite of yours.
KARINA: She's so nice. Can we accept these?
GATOMON: It would be ruse to refuse them. And it's nice to see you getting along so well with people your own age.
KARINA: Well, I guess we're going to the ball.
GATOMON: Yay!

[That night, Karina and Gatomon stood with the rest of the servants watching Daisy and the others leave for the ball.]

DAISY: Now don't forget Karina. You'll be here to meet us tomorrow morning.
KARINA: Yes, step-mother.

[The three humans and three Digimon sweep out of the house and climb into the carriage. Once they had gone, the servants went to finish their work and Karina and Gatomon sneaked back to their room. Removing their work dresses, they pull on their gowns. Gatomon places the jeweled headband between her ears while Karina claps the pearl necklace around her neck and threads the ribbon through her hair. Laying the blue shawls around their shoulders they tie the capes around their necks and head out through the back door.]

[Fifteen minutes later they arrive at the carriage. Kendric is there waiting for them.]

KENDRIC: Lady Karina, Lady Gatomon, please step in.

[He holds open the door and helps them into the carriage. He them climbs up next to Wormmon and heads towards the castle.]

[Soon they arrive at the front stairway. Kendric jumps down to help Karina and Gatomon out.]

KENDRIC: Princess Mia has arranged for me to drive you home at one o'clock on the morning.
KARINA: Thank you. I'll remember.
KENDRIC: Enjoy the ball.

[Karina and Gatomon climb the stairs, but before they enter the ballroom, a figure stops them.]

PERSON: Lady Rina.
KARINA: Your highness. *curtsy*
TAKIUS: Please, there's no need of that. I was hoping you'd come tonight.
PATAMON: That's all he ever talked bout today.
TAKIUS: *blush* Patamon!
KARINA & GATOMON: *giggle*
TAKIUS: *blush* You did that too!
PATAMON: *blush*
TAKIUS: Anyway, I was wondering if you'd like a tour of the castle. These balls can get dull after awhile and not much is happening now.
KARINA: I'd love to.
GATOMON: Me too.
PATAMON: Well then, shall we begin?

[Patamon offers Gatomon his arm, which she takes and Takius does the same for Karina.]

PATAMON_PRINCESS: Prince Takius and Prince Patamon led Karina and Gatomon on a tour of the palace. They passed through lavish rooms and saw countless portraits and suits of armor. Then Takius led them into--
VEEMON: Patamon_Princess!
PATAMON_PRINCESS: Veemon, hi!
VEEMON: What are you doing standing out here?
PATAMON_PRINCESS: I'm just narrating part of the story.
VEEMON: Are you almost done?
PATAMON_PRINCESS: Yes. *clears throat* Then Takius led them into a room that was full of portraits. Okay, I'm done.
VEEMON: Great, then let's join the ball!

[In the portrait room.]

KARINA: Wow. Who are all these people?
TAKIUS: These are the royal families of the past.

[Karina stops in front of one showing two young boys, a girl. and three little Digimon. She points to the youngest.]

KARINA: Is this you?
TAKIUS: Yes. That was painted soon after we were introduced to our Digimon; Poyomon, Yuramon, and Punimon.
GATOMON: Cute.

[Patamon shows them another one.]

PATAMON: And this is of us a few years later after we first digivolved to Tokomon, Tanemon, and Tsunomon.
TAKIUS: As I recall, you were known as the Terrible T Trio.
PATAMON: Do you have to bring that up?

[Gatomon points to one next to it.]

GATOMON: And this is you now.
PATAMON: Yep.
KARINA: Who's this?
GATOMON: Huh?

[Karina and Takius had moved across the room and were looking at a small painting. The two Digimon hurry over to join them.]

TAKIUS: I don't know. I keep forgetting to ask.

[King Tatius silently enters the room.]

GATOMON: She looks just like you, Kari.
PATAMON: Kari?
KARINA: It's a nickname, like Rina. My full name is Karina.
TAKIUS: Karina. I like it.
TATIUS: *cough*
TAKIUS: Father!
KARINA: Your majesty.
TATIUS: There you are, Takius, I've been looking for you. Mia's fiancé will be arriving soon.
TAKIUS: Of course, father. I must have lost track of time.
TATIUS: You and Patamon go on to the ballroom. I wish to talk with Lady Karina for a minute.
TAKIUS: Yes, father.

[He and Patamon leave.]

KARINA: I am sorry I deceived you about my name.
TATIUS: Thinks nothing of it. You didn't deceive us. It's a nickname. Now, would you like to know about this portrait?
KARINA: Yes, your majesty.
TATIUS: It was about twenty-five years ago. May lady wife, rest her soul, had recently given birth to our son Martin. Her best friend, a princess from a neighboring kingdom, was visiting. One day, during a stroll through the village, she met a young man. The two fell in love, even though they came from different worlds. Her father ordered her to never see the young man again, but she refused and would sneak out to meet him. When the king found out, he threatened to send her far away.
GATOMON: But they were in love.
TATIUS: Yes, very much so, that the princess was willing to give up her claim to the throne and let her younger brother become next in line. When the king heard this, he realized how deep her feelings for the young man were, so he stepped aside and let her follow her heart.
KARINA: And the princess and young man got married?
TATIUS: Yes. They lived here in the village where he had lived all his life. The princess didn't want anyone to know her true identity, so they came up with a history for her, and the villager's were none the wiser. *chuckle* Actually, a very ingenious plan.
KARINA: Did they live happily ever after?
TATIUS: Sadly, no. For the first four years, everything was perfect for them. And when she became pregnant, they thought their life couldn't get any better. But their happiness didn't last long. When their daughter was very young, the princess fell terribly ill. She tried to fight it, but to no avail. The sickness took her from this world. The husband was distraught. For three years he mourned for his lost wife and tried to raise their daughter. But he realized that he couldn't do it alone. So he remarried, a widow with two young daughters. It was a marriage of convenience only and all was quiet. But then disaster struck the family again. Two years later, while working in his shop, the stove over heated and exploded. Now, with no blood relatives left, the young girl's fate was left in her step-mother's hands.
KARINA: Has she been there since?
TATIUS: As far as I know.
KARINA: That's so sad.

[Mia suddenly runs into the room.]

MIA: Oh, Karina! TK said you were here. My fiancé is arriving soon and I need someone there with me. Is that all right, father?
TATIUS: Yes, you may go on.

[Mia and Karina leave the room.]

GATOMON: Your majesty, that story you told, the young girl is--
TATIUS: Yes,. So you know?
GATOMON: I was told the history fifteen years ago.
TATIUS: But you never told?
GATOMON: It wasn't the right time. But soon, it will have to be revealed.
TATIUS: Yes. The truth will come out.

[Down in the ballroom, King Tatius re-joins the party, and sits in his throne between Martin and Mia. Gatomon sits between Palmon and Patamon on the large pillow.]

TATIUS: Did I miss anything?
MIA: *giggle* Only Takius taking Kari out for a few turns on the dance floor.
TATIUS: Yes, he's quite taken with her.

[Izak approaches]

IZAK: Your majesty, Prince Jonathan has arrived.
MIA: Oh...
TATIUS: Wonderful. Send him in.

[Izak leaves and Tatius stands up. Everyone in the room quiets down and Takius quickly returns to his seat, after making sure Karina was close by.]

TATIUS: My good people. I am pleased to announce an engagement, between my only daughter, Princess Michela to Prince Jonathan from the nearest kingdom.

[Prince Jonathan enters the room and walks towards them, the candlelight reflecting off his glasses, hiding his eyes. Tatius pulls Mia to her feet as Jonathan stops and bows.]

JONATHAN: King Tatius, it is an honor to be here, to finally meet you lovely dau--au--

[He loses his train of thought as his eye's meet Mia's.]

MIA: *blush*
JONATHAN: *cough* Excuse me for my rudeness in staring.
MIA: Oh. *curtsy* No, it was I who was rude. Welcome, Prince Jonathan to our land. I am Michela, though everyone calls me Mia.
JONATHAN: Well, Mia, since this is a ball, would you care to dance with me?
MIA: All right.

[As they move away, a Digimon is revealed to have been standing behind him. Palmon walks over to him.]

PALMON: Hello. What is your name?
DIGIMON: Prince Gomamon, miss.
PALMON: I am Princess Palmon.
GOMAMON: Your highness, it is nice to finally meet you.
PALMON: And I to meet you.
GOMAMON: I am sorry. These large parties make me nervous.
PALMON: I understand. Would you like to join us on the pillow?
GOMAMON: That would be nice.

[A couple hours later, Mia and Karina are standing alone to the side of the ballroom, their partners having gone to get some drinks.]

KARINA: Okay, Mia, it's your turn to spill. You've been dancing with Prince Jonathan since you met him. I thought you were against your arranged marriage.
MIA: I was. I mean, I am. I mean-- oh, okay. I don't like the idea of having my future carved out for me, but what was amazing is that he feels the same way. He's smart, funny, a little nervous, but that just makes him nicer. Plus, he's so handsome. And he wants to take the time for us to get to know each other.
KARINA: It seems that you've found your Prince Charming.
MIA: So have you.
KARINA: What do you mean?
MIA: TK, of course. I know you like him a lot. And it's obvious he feels the same about you.
KARINA: You're wrong. After this ball, we'll never see each other again.
MIA: Oh, Kari...

[Takius and Jonathan return with the drinks.]

TAKIUS: Kari, are you all right?
KARINA: Yes, I'm okay.
TAKIUS: My sister hasn't said anything upsetting?
KARINA: No, no. Nothing like that.
MIA: Oh, Jonathan. I never introduced you to my very good friend. Karina, this is Prince Jonathan. Prince Jonathan, this is the Lady Karina.
KARINA: *curtsy* It's nice to meet you.
JONATHAN: Yes, Mia has told me about you. If you don't mind my asking, are you related to any of the royal families in any of the nearby kingdoms?
KARINA: No, your highness.
JONATHAN: Oh, I'm sorry. It's just that you look remarkably like my father's older sister.
KARINA: Oh, is she here?
JONATHAN: Actually I never met her, but I've seen her portrait. She married a glass maker twenty-five years ago and lived in the village here.
KARINA: That must be the woman I saw in a portrait here. King Tatius said it was a princess who gave up her title to marry a villager.
JONATHAN: That must be her. You do look an awful lot like her.
KARINA: It must be a coincidence.
TAKIUS: You mentioned both your parents had passed away. What did they do?
KARINA: Well, my mother would stay home to look after me and all I remember are the stories she told me about princesses living in castle. She was also the one who introduced Gatomon and I when she was a baby YukimiBotamon. And my father was a glass-- No, it's not possible.
MIA: What's wrong?
KARINA: The story King Tatius told me, it's just like what happened to me and my family. It's can't be-- I can't be-- No!

[Gatomon looks towards them.]

GATOMON: Kari?

[She runs over to the small group.]

GATOMON: Kari, what's wrong?
KARINA: Gatomon, did you know? Was my mother a princess? Was she?
GATOMON: Yes.
KARINA: Why didn't you tell me? Does step-mother know?
GATOMON: No, your father never told her or anyone else.
TAKIUS: Lady Karina, are you all right?
KARINA: Lady? That's why everybody's been calling me that? Because my mother was a princess? I can't take anymore of this. I want to go home!
MIA: All right, Kari. I'll take you home.
KARINA: No. I'm sorry. I want to be alone. Good-bye.

[She hands Takius her glass and runs out of the room t the carriages, with Gatomon following close behind.]

KENDRIC: Lady Karina?
KARINA: I want to go home right now!
KENDRIC: Yes, miss.

[He helps her and Gatomon into the carriage and drives away.]

MIA: Oh, dear.
JONATHAN: I am sorry. I did not realize--
MIA: It's all right, Jonathan. It wasn't your fault.

[Patamon flies over.]

MIA: I didn't realize it at all.
PATAMON: TK, what happened?
TAKIUS: Kari found out her past and it scared her.
PATAMON: She must have been in a big hurry, since she didn't notice her necklace came off.

[He picks up a thin chain with a pearl drop hanging from it, off the floor and drops it into Takius's hand.]

JONATHAN: That's like the necklace that's in the portrait. I've seen it in my father's room.
MIA: She probably feels betrayed. Didn't you hear her? She thinks we were nice to her because her mother was a princess. Oh...
TAKIUS: Mia, where does she live? I want to talk to her.
MIA: It's not a good time. She needs to think everything through.

[A couple hours later, Daisy, her children, and the Digimon return home. Gatomon opens the door for them.]

DAISY: I tell you, that was strange. That mysterious girl just ran out all of a sudden. Oh, well...
YOLANDA: And did you see who Princess Michela is marrying? Royalty have it all.
SONDRA: *yawn* Yes, but I sort of feel bad for her. Not being able to choose her own husband.
BIYOMON: Good thing we don't have to worry about things like that. Right, Hawkmon?
HAWKMON: Right. *yawn*
DAISY: Hey, where's Karina?
GATOMON: She wasn't feeling well, so I let her go to bed saying I'd wait up for you.
DAISY: All right. Goodnight.
GATOMON: Goodnight.
VEEMON: I ate too much again. I either need smaller eyes or a bigger stomach.

[When everyone had gone to bed, Gatomon returned to her room and crawled into bed next to Karina.]

KARINA: Gatomon?
GATOMON: You're awake.
KARINA: I can't sleep. Why did you never tell me?
GATOMON: I promised your mother I wouldn't. She didn't want you to think she deprived you of being a princess because she was truly happy of her life in the country.
KARINA: So, you've known all this time?
GATOMON: She told me while she was sick, when I was still a YukimiBotamon. She made me promise not to tell anyone. She never regretted her choice in marrying your father.
KARINA: I remember when she smiled. There was pure happiness in her eyes. And her necklace... I lost it. I don't know where it is!
GATOMON: Shhh... I'm sure it will turn up. Now, why don't you try to go to sleep. You're exhausted.

[Outside, someone moved away from Karina's door.]

PERSON: A princess?

[Around that same time at the palace, Takius stood on a balcony, looking out over the village. In his hand he holds the pearl necklace.]

TAKIUS: Where are you?

[Mia walks out to stand next to him.]

MIA :TK? Why don't you go to bed?
TAKIUS: can't sleep for worrying about her.
MIA: She'll be all right. She's stronger than she looks.
TAKIUS: I knew that from the first moment I looked into her eyes. If I can't see her, at least I need to find out if she's okay.
MIA: I'll send Kendric and Wormmon to check things out mid-morning.
TAKIUS: Thanks, Mia.
MIA: You just have to come clean and tell Kari how you feel.
TAKIUS: I will. I'll never let her out of my sight again.

[At noontime, Karina rolls over in bed.]

KARINA: *yawn* I can't believe I slept so deeply. Oh, my, the sun is high in the sky! They let me sleep in? Why?

[She goes to the door, only to find it locked.]

KARINA: No! What's going on?!

[A piece of paper sticks out from under it.]

KARINA: What's this? 'You are not to be disturbed at all today. The princess must have her beauty sleep. Daisy.' How'd they find out? Gatomon!
GATOMON: What is it?
KARINA: My step-mother found out I'm a princess!
GATOMON: How? Unless she heard us talking.
KARINA: Oh. What's going to happen to us now?

[A couple hours later, in the palace.]

TAKIUS: Locked in her room?
WORMMON: Yes, your highness.
TAKIUS: Why? Who did it?
WORMMON: Her step-mother found out that Lady Karina is a princess and locked her in her room. She is making plans to send her away.
TAKIUS: Then I'd never see her again. I'm going over there to rescue her. Where does she live?
MIA: TK, be rational. You can't just storm up to her house like that. What would the kingdom think? And it wouldn't help Kari all that much either.
JONATHAN: Mia's right, Takius. We have to make a plan. I want to rescue my only cousin, too, but we can't just run in.
MIA: We need a plan, and I may just have one.

[That night, Daisy and everyone had just left for the ball. Karina sits on her bed, holding the blue shawl and a note.]

KARINA: It's all over. Step-mother is sending us to work at her brother's house in another village in a whole different kingdom. And she's even thinking of separating us.
GATOMON: Oh, Kari, everything will work out for the best. You'll see. Maybe even right now.

[There's a soft knock on the door.]

VOICE: Kari?
GATOMON: Wow, that's amazing.
KARINA: Mia, is that you?
MIA: Yes. We'll have you out in a minute.

[A few moments later, the door opens.]

GOMAMON: I knew those lock picks would come in handy one day.
JONATHAN: And why do you even have them?
GOMAMON: Heh. Emergencies?
KARINA: What are you guys doing here?
MIA: We're here to rescue you, of course.
TAKIUS: We found out you were locked up.
KARINA: TK? You're here too?
TAKIUS: Kari, I don't care if you're a princess or not. I love you for who you are.
KARINA: What did you say?
MIA: He said he loved you.
TAKIUS: *blush* Michela!! Out!

[He pushes Mia, Jonathan, and Gomamon out of the room and shuts the door.]

TAKIUS: *cough* I mean it. I love you. From the first moment I saw you, I never wanted you to leave.
KARINA: Takius...
TAKIUS: I want you to come to the palace with me. Not just for the ball, but forever.
KARINA: Takius, I... I... ow!

[Gatomon pokes Karina in the back with her claw.]

GATOMON: *whisper* Follow your heart.
KARINA: I... I love you, too... TK.
TAKIUS: I understand if you don't feel the same way, but-- did you say you love me?!
KARINA: *giggle* Yes, I do love you. With all my heart.

[Takius moves over to Karina and places the pearl necklace around her neck.]

KARINA: My necklace.
TAKIUS: You left it behind when you left the ball.

[Suddenly, the door opens and Mia, Jonathan, and Gomamon fall into the room.]

TAKIUS: Michela! Were you listening?
MIA: What? Me? Eavesdropping? I can't believe you'd say such a thing to me.
JONATHAN: Is there something I should know?
MIA I'm just looking out for my little brother. Now, all of you please get out. I have to get Kari and Gatomon ready for the costume ball.
KARINA: The ball? But I have nothing to wear.
MIA: It's already taken care of. *wink*

[Mia closes the door on the two boys and Digimon, then opens the package she had been carrying.]

MIA: Now, let's get you dressed.

[An hour later, Mia and Jonathan enter the ball room in their costumes as pop-singers. Gomamon follows them with a guitar slung over his back. Behind him walks Takius as a pirate, and Karina and Gatomon as fairies. The room becomes silent as the other Prime Minister raps his staff on the floor.]

TENTOMON: Presenting, Princess Michela and Prince's Jonathan and Gomamon.

[The crowd clap as the three of them make their way to the throne's. Takius quickly whispers to Tentomon.]

TENTOMON: And Prince Takius and Princess Karina and Gatomon.
YOLANDA & SONDRA: Princess?!
HAWKMON & BIYOMON: Princess?!
VEEMON: *mouth full* Wha--?!

[Karina , Takius, and Gatomon reach the bottom of the stairs.]

VOICE: Gatomon! You made it!

[Patamon comes running across the floor towards them wearing a large floppy hat, but it falls over his eyes and he runs into Gatomon, sending them both to the floor.]

GATOMON: Patamon! I missed you!
PATAMON: I missed you too!

[Patamon helps her to her feet then pulls her across the floor.]

PATAMON: I'm a pirate and I'm taking you to my ship!
GATOMON: *giggle*

[The two Digimon, followed by Gomamon head over to where Palmon, Gabumon, and Agumon are already seated.]

DAISY: A princess?!
KARINA: Step-mother!
DAISY: You can't be a princess. Your father was a lowly glass maker and your mother a common village girl.
TAKIUS: Don't you dare take that tone with my future bride!
DAISY: But, your highness..
TATIUS: Enough! I will clear up this matter. I have had a long talk with Prince Jonathan's father and have now the whole story. Princess Karina's mother was indeed the older sister of Jonathan's father. She fell deeply in love with a glass maker of this village, giving up her royal title and possessions. The only thing she brought with her was a pearl drop necklace that she would pass onto her child, as it was passed onto her. Before she left, the princess told my dear wife that no one would know the true identity of her heritage. She didn't want her children to be treated differently, but to be normal children. The Princess Karina is her only child, only recently discovering this news herself. Come here, my dear.

[Karina and Takius approach the king, who leans over and kisses her forehead.]

TATIUS: Welcome home, Karina. And may your life here be full of happiness.
KARINA: *curtsy* Thank you, your majesty.
DAISY: Hmph. Fine then. Yolanda, Sondra, come. We're leaving.
SONDRA: But, mother...
DAISY: Let's go.

[The three of them and Biyomon and Hawkmon leave, shortly followed by Veemon with his arms full of treats.]

[Takius bows to Karina.]

TAKIUS: Princess Karina, would you give me the honor of this dance?
KARINA: *curtsy* Of course, Prince Takius.

[He leads her out on the dance floor, joining the others.]

MIA: They look perfect together.
JONATHAN: Yeah, but why should they have all the fun?

[He pulls Mia out onto the dance floor.]

MARTIN: I guess dreams do come true, and you don't need a fairy godmother to do it. You just need a couple of very good friends.
TATIUS: When she first came, I recognized something about her, but couldn't put my finger on it. It wasn't until I came upon her and TK in the portrait room looking at a portrait of her mother that I realized it. She's the exact image of her mother and even has her determination. And Princess Gatomon...
GATOMON: Yes, your majesty?
TATIUS: How did you find out?
GATOMON: I was a YukimiBotamon when Kari's mother became very ill. She wanted to tell someone about her past so it wouldn't be lost. She knew she didn't have much time left. So she told me everything and I promised not to tell Kari until the time was right. She wanted Kari to understand that true love can break the social roadblock and a princess can marry a villager. And she wanted Kari to follow her own heart and make her won decisions; something you can't fully do as a princess.
TATIUS: You are right. I have a lot to think about. But it would seem I don't have to worry about Michela's arranged marriage partner. She seems to like him more than expected.
MARTIN: It's all she talks about now.
TATIUS: And now since my two youngest have found partners, it is time to concentrate on finding you a wife.
MARTIN: Not again, father.

[On the dance floor...]

KARINA: TK, did you really mean what you said to me step-mother? Do you really want me for your wife?
TAKIUS: Of course, silly. But I guess I should have asked you first.
KARINA: Yes, you should have, but I would have said yes anyway!

[She leans in and gives him a kiss, then blushes and looks away. Takius smiles and lifts her chin up with her finger.]

TAKIUS: I love you, Karina. Will you marry me?
KARINA: Yes!

[He leans down and gives her a kiss, which she returns with all her love.]

JONATHAN: They stole my idea.
MIA: What idea is that?
JONATHAN: This.

[He leans over and kisses her, which she returns.]

TAKIUS: Oh, I did have a ring, too. But where did I put it?
VOICE: It's right here.
TAKIUS: Huh?

[Everyone stops and looks towards the stairs where Patamon_Princess stands.]

PATAMON & GATOMON: Patamon_Princess!

[They run/fly towards her and Gatomon jumps into her arms as Patamon lands on her head.]

PATAMON_PRINCESS: Hi, you guys. Here you go, TK. You left it at the engravers.
TAKIUS: Thanks.

[He opens the small box to reveal a gold banded ring with pink and green stones set in it.]

KARINA: Oh...

[He slips the ring onto her finger and then kisses her as the crowd claps.]

PATAMON: Miss Princess? Do you have a ring I could give Gatomon?
PATAMON_PRINCESS: Of course, Patamon. He you go.

[Patamon flies off her head and takes the box. Patamon_Princess sets Gatomon on the floor.]

PATAMON: Gatomon, this is for you.

[He puts on Gatomon a ring that mirror's Karina's except it has orange and purple stones.]

GATOMON: Wow. It's beautiful.
PATAMON: You're beautiful.

[He pulls Gatomon towards him and is about to kiss her when his hat falls back over his eyes.]

GATOMON: *giggle*
PATAMON: Oh! Patamon_Princess, could you hold this for a minute?
PATAMON_PRINCESS: Certainly.

[She takes the hat from Patamon who then proceeds to kiss Gatomon properly.]

[Two months later, the crowd of villagers cheer as Takius and Karina emerge from the chapel. Among the guests at the wedding are Karina's family, her uncle (Jonathan's father), Patamon_Princess, and Jonathan and Mia who had just returned from their honeymoon.]

PATAMON_PRINCESS: And everyone lived happily ever after.
VOICE: Hey! Stop the story!
ALL: Huh?

[Everyone looks up to a balcony where Daisy stands with Veemon.]

DAVIS: Where's my sundae and my regular clothes?! You said I could have them if I went through with this story!
PATAMON_PRINCESS: Oh, very well.

[The dress that Davis is wearing disappears leaving him a shirt and boxers. But before he can get mad, a large sundae with all the toppings appears in front of him, as well as one for Veemon.]

DAVIS: Now that's what I'm talking about!
VEEMON: Yum yum!
ALL: *laugh*
PATAMON_PRINCESS: And now everyone lived happily ever after.
KARINA: But wait. Where's Gatomon?
TAKIUS: And Patamon?

[Inside the chapel, the two Digimon were whispering to each other.]

PATAMON: Ready?
GATOMON: Ready.

[In a sparkling glow of light the two of them digivolve and fly up into the sky.]

ANGEMON: Angemon!
ANGEWOMON: Angewomon!

[And amid cheers, they kissed as a rainbow lit up in the sky and thousand of Cherry Blossoms fall from it.]

PATAMON_PRINCESS: Happily ever after.
